Separation Checklist: The First 30 Days
The first month after separation is disorienting. This checklist breaks it into concrete, doable steps. It is educational guidance, not legal advice — where it matters, get a professional.
Week 1 — documents
- Copy or photograph: marriage certificate, IDs, passports, birth certificates (yours and children's)
- Bank statements (12 months if possible), tax returns, pay slips
- Mortgage or lease documents, title deeds, vehicle registration papers
- Insurance policies: life, medical, household, vehicle
- Pension, provident and retirement fund statements
- Wills and any existing antenuptial or settlement agreements
Week 1 — accounts & access
- Open a bank account in your own name if you don't have one
- Change passwords on your personal email, bank and social accounts
- Check what is jointly held and what is separate
- Review shared accounts and decide what happens to direct debits and income
Week 2 — support
- Consult an attorney who practises family law in your jurisdiction
- Arrange emotional support — a counsellor, support group, or trusted people
- If children are involved, understand your jurisdiction's approach to parenting arrangements
Week 2–4 — safety & stability
- If there is any risk of harm, prioritise safety first — contact local support services
- Establish a simple budget for the transition period
- Keep a dated log of important events, agreements and communications
- Do not sign anything you do not fully understand
